An echocardiogram uses sound waves called ultrasound to look at the size, shape, and motion of the heart. Appointments are an hour in length. The patient will be contacted by the booking clerk.

An electrocardiogram (ECG or EKG) measures the electrical activity of your heart. The heart generates an electrical signal, which flows out from your heart through your body. Small electrical sensors, called electrodes, are put on your skin to sense the electricity that began in your heart. The electrical activity is then turned into a graph. This can give doctors an idea of whether your heart is beating normally.

A Holter Monitor is a five-lead, two-channel hookup, It is normally worn for 24 or 48 hours. The data on the recording is analyzed and prepared in a report that is forwarded to your physician.

A Cardiac Event recorder is a two-lead, single-channel hook-up. It is normally worn for two weeks but a month or two is not uncommon. Patients remove electrodes and replace them after bathing. While it has a threshold-based, auto-recording feature, normally it does not record anything, except patient-documented episodes. Once a patient pushes the record button, it stores 30 seconds before and 30 seconds after a single one-minute “event”.

A stress test is an assessment done in two parts. In a very controlled situation, the heart is stressed using either exercise on a treadmill or a chemical injection, depending on the status of the individual getting the test. Heart rate, rhythm, and blood pressure are continuously monitored throughout the entire exam. This appointment takes approximately 30 minutes.
